Kansas City PezHead Gathering

I went to the Kansas City Pezheads Gathering last Saturday. It was loads of fun! It was my first convention/gathering since MNPEZCON in 2007.

Everything that I have is now "personal pez" and not part of any business. So when I sell something, I'm selling part of my collection and downsizing. I have kept a couple dozen vintage for myself, but the rest go to with me for sale. If they find a new home, fine; if they get to come back with me, fine, too.

I sold several really nice ones. I'll miss them, but I'm glad someone else will enjoy Casper, Elephant with hair, Pig Whistle, Clown with Collar, Crocodile, Full Body Santa, Rooster, and several other not-quite-as-expensive NF vintage pez.

I don't collect Pez Pins. However I have 3 new ones. Two came with the "goodie bag" and one was included in a mystery grab-bag that I got at the charity auction. The 2 KC pins can be seen by clicking here. And this (same pin, different lighting) is the 2009 (later this summer) 17th Annual National Pez Convention pin:

I just finished my 2007 taxes (yea for extensions) in which I told the IRS I closed my business on 12/30/2007. Since my domain is paid for through next year, ReevesCollectibles.com will still be valid until next summer. I'll probably keep this blog for much longer to talk about my pez and sell my personal extras.

Today I started unpacking some old boxes of my personal collection that had been packed away. It sure was fun to find Yummy Bubbles, a gold Baloo, Tweenies, Funky Faces, and many others from the past decade that had been bought and just packed away because of "the business" taking priority.

MN PEZ CON

The Minnesota PEZ convention is over, and all that is left is the driving home. I had a great time, particularly talking with old and new friends in my room Thursday evening and all day Friday during room-hopping. I sold enough PEZ that I think I will cover all of my expenses and actually make a small profit. It was a quiet, relaxed convention for the most part. I actually enjoy that more, because I get nervous when there are so many people in my room at a time that I can't see them all or see all of my PEZ or at least chat a little with each person.

I drove from Wichita to Osceola on Wednesday, after my husband skillfully packed our small SUV to the brim (well, almost, he left the top clear so I could see out the rear view mirror). I found Elvis in a Walgreens somewhere south of Osceola in Iowa, so I bought 4. I sold 2, so if you're reading this and need Elvis, I have 2 for sale. :-)

Thursday I drove the rest of the way and arrived at Ramada Inn Mall of America in Minneapolis around 2pm. It took 3 trips on a porter's cart (no porter, just me) to unload. Then it took about 3 hours to unpack and set up. I got some dinner then opened up in the evening.

Friday I had my room open most of the day. I gave my free bingo card to Judy to play for me, but she didn't win us anything. I spent bingo and auction time finishing putting price stickers on my PEZ because it is so much easier when people don't have to constantly ask how much something costs, especially on Saturday. I didn't sell a lot on Friday, but talked with a lot of nice people. I especially like chatting with new collectors or people who are at their first convention.

Saturday was different this year. Dealer setup started at 9, the hall opened to convention members at 11 and the public at 12, and it lasted until 4:30. Except for eating lunch out of a vending machine, I liked the later time.

I only sold about a dozen NF vintage pez, but I had enough other stuff that I did okay. It is going to take a lot of work on ebay or another convention to really reduce my inventory so I can get out of being a dealer and back to being "just" a collector. My neighbor offered to share a room with me in St. Louis, so next summer I may take her up on that if we decide not to bring the whole family.

If anyone who picked up my card at the convention is reading this, if you didn't buy that PEZ you were admiring and are wishing you had, send me an email!

ReevesCollectibles.com now redirects to here! I had to renew my domain registration this month, so I made a change to point the domain here. I don't use this much, but it's better than the 1-page freebie that comes with registration.

I'm getting set to take tons of PEZ to Minnesota PezCon next week. I'm taking the vast majority of my personal vintage pez to sell also. My plan is that whatever doesn't sell will be my new, downsided collection. I have held back a few that have special memories, like Brutus (my Mom found it in a toy box in my childhood closet after I started collecting), Olive Oyl and Popeye A; die-cut Casper that was a gift from my husband for picking up an "anything you want" split in our bowling league years ago; Foghorn Leghorn and Henry Hawk because I liked that cartoon so much; and a few others with special attachments like that.

Liquidation sale in progress

I have started trying to liquidate my inventory. I want my basement back. Since I'm not very active in the PEZ business or even in my own collecting hobby, I'm going to try to get out.

We're going to Minnesota for the MN PEZ Con in August. I'm posting some for sale lists on PEZheads to see what I can clear out before then.

First up was recent/current MIBs for $1. All the Sponge Bob and Sesame Street are gone. They are discontinued so I probably could have sold them for $2 each. A few of the others have sold, but I haven't had any request since the first hour after my post. Two of my 7 floor shippers are gone. Yea!

The next bunch will be my giants and wobblers. Since they will take a lot of room in the vehicle to transport to MN, I hope a bunch of them sell online.

PezHeads & a show

Richie, from PEZ Collector's News, has created a MySpace-like area for PezHeads. If I ever get around to more computer time for my collection and PEZ business, I might join.

I had a booth at a show today. It's my first this year. I did one at a Bazaar last year. Today I sold a whopping $35 (retail, sales tax included) of PEZ. Considering my low profit margin, I think my gross profit covered the booth fee, so I may have a net profit. And a profit, however small it may be, is better than a loss.

Making some changes

As I have been updating some of my other blogs, I have been making blog changes because of some Blogger enhancements. This blog got a makeover, too.

Changes in my PEZ business are coming soon also. As I have been working of filing my Retailer's Sales Tax report, I've been considering an inventory reduction/liquidation sale. Ebay would give me the most exposure, but it costs quite a bit for someone with a low profit margin like me. LiveDeal is free, but it only has fixed price listings (I think), however there is the "make an offer" option that can be selected.

The tricky part, and the reason for needing to do this, is finding the time to get everything ready. I will need to take photos, write up descriptions, and the compose the listings. I have Turbo Lister from when I had some eBay auctions in November, but I don't know if that will work with LiveDeal. So, if anyone is actually reading this, check out this LiveDeal search for PEZ.

In Search of a PEZring manager

I posted an email to PEZheads recently looking for new manager for PEZring (a webring). It's been in existance since 1996, and I've been the manager since '98 or '99, I think. I haven't kept up with it in several years, so I'm trying to pass it on instead of deleting it.

Selling at a Spring Bazaar

Today I sold PEZ at a "show" that was not a PEZ Convention for the first time. It was called Spring Bazaar and billed in the newspaper as a women's show. I wasn't expecting to sell much, particularly not vintage pez. I did make enough profit to cover the cost of the booth and my $10 worth of PEZ prize for guessing the number of candies in a jar. I'll probably clear less than $5 over expenses. It was a good experience anyway, though. I probably will do it again, as long as the cost of the booth isn't any higher.

I just got an email inquiry from someone looking for vintage pez who found me on the internet. The email was to Nancy @ Reeves Collectibles . com so it came from a fairly recent source. I hope something pans out.

I have been very lax with my pez business lately. Life as a mother of 2 toddlers is very time consuming. However, I am scheduled to participate in a Spring Bazaar in May, so hopefully I'll sell some currents and give away a bunch of business cards.

Halloween Give Aways

I gave away PEZ for Halloween. The weather was really nice, so we had many trick-or-treaters. I had 90 PEZ that a friend sent to me. They came carded, but about 70 of them were given away loose with 2 packs of candy because they bubbles were coming off the cards. We had to break out the chocolate bars for the last 10 kids. Now I need to stock up for next year.

Minnesota PEZcon 9

In just a few days I will be on my way to the lovely Thunderbird Hotel and Conference Center for the Minnesota PEZcon. It will be my 2nd MN con. The bigger deal, though, is that it will be my first time away from my baby overnight, and only the 2nd time away from my toddler overnight. I know I will have a great time at the convention, see a lot of pezheads, sell a lot of pez, and hopefully buy some pez, too, but I will miss my boys.

Spongebob Squarepants & Marvel Heroes

I got my cases of Spongebob Squarepants & Marvel Heroes in a few weeks ago. I have several sets of all 6 SB (SB on red, SB on blue, SB on yellow, SB in underwear, Squidward, and Patrick), a few sets of 4 (with just 1 normal SB), and many extra SB in undies.

For the Marvel Heroes I received no Spider-Man on the blue stem. I was so disappointed. Since I sell currents at a comic book store, I'm hoping to still do pretty well with the Marvel Heroes. I have many sets of 3 (Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Wolverine) or 4 (same with both Wolverine stem colors) available.

Wichita PEZ Gathering

The turnout (yesterday) was small, but we had a nice pezzy chat for about an hour. My baby was fussy almost the whole time, which wasn't fun, but we talked PEZ and I bought a set of the Walmart Kids Connection Crystal Bugz for my personal collection. We are going to try again in April, on the first Saturday, if the store owner where we held id approves of the date selection.

Just 2 more days until we have a local get-together of Pezheads. I know of 3 definites and 1 probable. We are trying to contact a few other people, and I have also put flyers up in a couple of stores that sell pez. Next time (next month?) we will do it on a Saturday in hopes of attracting a few out of town folks. I got an email from a couple in Oklahoma that would drive up for it on a Saturday. I hope it goes well, even if there are just a few of us!

I still haven't found the web space host that is right for me. I may just revise my template here and use this blog. It will be a bit unorthodox for a business and product listings, but it could work. Having other pages to link to would be better, but I think this will have to do if I'm going to get my pez for sale back on the web anytime soon.

Looking for webspace

My previous (free) webspace host (Thanks Michael) will be taking his server down over the next 2-3 months, so I am in the market for a new webspace host. I have been without my www.ReevesCollectibles.com site since Michael had harddisk problems this summer. I have looked at Yahoo, since I have an id and space on Geocities already. So far I am leaning toward upgrading my Blogspot space (where this blog is hosted) to one that will allow images and pages besides the blog. It's cheaper than Yahoo, and since I already have the domain name it makes the most sense so far. If anyone reading this knows of other reliable and cheap ($50 per year or less) webspace hosting, please let me know.

Timeline: A History of Consumption in the U.S. -- PEZ 1952

I'm sorry that I have done so little updating. The St. Louis convention was great! I finally got my 2002 taxes filed August 12 (3 days before my 4 month extension expired). Schedule C isn't really that bad, but I didn't start using a computer program for my business records until part way through the year.

I have ordered floor shippers of both the Funky Faces (to ship in September) and Emergency Heroes (to ship in October).

St. Louis PEZ Convention -- here I come

I am starting to get packed for taking PEZ to the 11th Annual National PEZ Convention in St. Louis next weekend. This will be my first time getting my own dealer's table for Saturday, so I am taking a lot more supplies than in the past. I am also taking a lot more pez than in the past, too! I have about 3 dozen Giant Pez and over 100 vintage pez, plus a pretty large stash of older loose footed pez, and some in bags and on cards. I'm really looking forward to it!

I just got the approval letter from Citibank in the mail for a credit card, too. I hope it arrives by next Wednesday so I can use it to pay for things instead of having to use our personal card. It would make record keeping so much easier than last year if the card comes in time.

If anyone is actually checking this page regularly, I apologize for so few updates.

I have the Mini Bride and Groom Wobblers from Funko available. I have also made an offer on the Pezheads email list to order the new Giant Talking Charlie Brown Major League Baseball pez if I can get requests for 10 of any specific team. So far the most I have for one team is 4. I haven't gotten a new request in about a week, so this might fall through, although I may go ahead with the most popular ones (and the Royals) anyway and hope to sell them at the St. Louis convention and/or on eBay.

Sales Taxes

I finished my state sales tax report this evening and wrote a check to the state of Kansas. I had over $1000 in sales, but since most of them were to out of state customers, the taxable sales amount was under $200. I remitted $7.51 in sales tax.

I have Peter Pez wacky wobblers (aka head bobbers), and Giant Simpson pez in stock. I have both the non-talking Homer and the talking Bart. Homer came in before Christmas, the Peter Pez wobblers came in while I was out of town between Christmas and New Years, and Bart came in last week. I also picked up a case of Pez Card Game starter decks several weeks ago.

I still need to revise my webstore, it is quite out of date. I still have almost everything listed, but it is missing a lot of new stuff. All of the NF pez that I purchased in November and the new things I just mentioned are not on the webstore.

I have started working on my State Sales Tax report. It is due January 27. Since I have used a variety of ways to track my purchases and sales this first year, I'm inputing everything into my new accounting software (Peachtree Accounting 2003) first. I made an agreement with myself and my husband that if I got the tax stuff done by this Saturday, I could go to the big bi-monthly flea market in town on Sunday. I want to find out how to get booth space there.

Sales list published

Last night (it was actually early this morning) I finally posted my sales list to PEZheads of the NF collection that I purchased in November. I listed all of them except Olive Oyl. She is my prize!

This morning when I checked my mail before work I had 1 request already. Now I have email from 12 different PEZheads. Unfortunately, for both me and many of them, the USA stemmed pez are very popular. I must have priced them very cheap, because several of them have 3-6 people wanting to buy them.

Pezzy Dance Of Joy!

I bought a collection of over 120 No Feet pez yesterday!! This is my first big investment for the business. The check that I wrote was the biggest one I have written since the closing when I bought my house. I hope to have the items all inventoried and priced over the Thanksgiving weekend. I will post a notice on the Pezheads email list and here. After the requests from the email list die down, I will add the remaining items to my website (and hopefully have the shopping cart working, too).

Giant PEZ on the way -- and maybe more

I just placed an order for a case of Giant Homer Simpson PEZ dispensers.

I'm also working on a potential collection purchase. If it works out I will have over 100 NF pez to add to my inventory. That will be a big investment for and a great step forward for my business! I'm very excited, but also nervous about tying up that much money in inventory.

Halloween

I gave away 45 new Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween PEZ dispensers (MIB) this evening. That's a few more than I expected, considering that the high temperature here was in the mid-thirties. I wore the hat from my Peter PEZ costume, and my son wore his Spider-Man costume to help me give out the dispensers. I taped a "coupon" on each package that is redeemable for a free pack of PEZ candy at the store when I have Sourz and some older PEZ for sale. Sneaky? Maybe. Good advertising? I think so.

It's been a while since I did an upate... I have made quite a few sales in the store now, and even had to restock the 24 count counter display. Frank (the store owner) said that one lady bought all of the pumpkins because the heads didn't glow (the stems glow). She didn't want glowing heads around her children's bedrooms that might scare them if they awoke during the night. The Sourz and refills have been selling some also. I'm hoping to go by there tonight to check on stock so I know what to bring on Friday.

I had an ad in the Valley Center Sweet Adelines show program this weekend. It was a 1/4 page ad on the inside back cover (so the background was orange instead of white). I think that was a good location, since it was next to the index of advertisers, and anywhere on a cover is more likely to be seen than many of the inside pages. The show theme was Feelin' Groovy so I had a Psychedelic Flower and some old 60's candy packs in the ad.

I've sold 2 pez in the store! Yippee! Okay, it's a slow start, but at least it's a start. Tomorrow we will be delivering the Sourz floor display and some candy refill packs if I can find them.

Still waiting

Due to some circumstances at the store (moving in & the owner being gone for a few days) and with me (not being available about 1/2 of the evenings in a week) I still haven't moved any of my PEZ into the comic book store. I have a bunch of Halloween PEZ, so hopefully we can get started soon!

Sourz candy in the trunk of a car overnight makes the whole car smell good!

My floor shipper of Sourz all have Sour Green Apple and Sour Watermelon candy. The only way for me to get the Sour Blue Raspberry and Sour Pineapple candy is to open an assorted pack of refills. I had heard about this phenomenon on the Pezheads email list. Out of my 6 counter boxes (24 each) of Halloween pez, I got 2 of the glowing pumpkins on orange stems (most are orange pumpkins on glowing stems). All of the rest of the Halloween pez are glowing heads on non-glowing stems.

My PezRep replied to my email... PEZ closes at noon on Fridays in the summer, so he can't check the status of my order until Tuesday. Bummer! But I did get an invoice marked "Paid" in today's mail, so my pez order is on it's way, I just don't know when it will arrived.

I have not received my order from PEZ yet. I have emailed my pezrep in hopes of tracking down the packages. I had them sent to my office because I didn't want them left on the porch at home. If they don't arrive today, I won't be able to get them until Tuesday. Our receptionist says the UPS guy usually comes late in the afternoon, so there still is a slight chance that they will arrive today.

It's official

I got my state tax id number last week, so now I guess Reeves Collectibles is official.

I placed my first order with PEZ Co. Inc. yesterday, so I should be able to get rolling very soon. I have web space lined up for my online store from a friend (but it's not set up yet), and I found a free e-commerce site for the shopping cart (that's set up but doesn't point to the store yet). All that's left to do is register my domain name, create the web site, and advertise. Oh, and price and move my current stock into the comic book store that is renting me space. Yippee!
